In the "How to use SimplePrint" screencast, it says that you can set up the application so that it does not require the user to enter a username and password.
How do I do this?
I thought using the following for the server to mount would do it: afp://guest;AUTH=No%20User%20Authent:password@192.168.1.254/SimplePrint
but it did not work (although it works fine in Tiger's Finder).
In the video, I was referring to if people have the machines bound to Active Directory and your printers don't use credentials then SImplePrint would not ask for a username and password.
So you want to have everyone on your network sign in with a guest account?
There is a way to have everyone connect to the server under a guest account, a work around sort of speak. Enable your server guest access with read only permissions. Then configure simplePrint with bound to active directory to yes (even if they are not), set credentials to add to printers to "No". This should work for you. Let me know if it doesn't. I believe this would not work mounting smb severs, but I'm not sure.
I recognize that letting everyone set up printers with guest permissions is relying on security through obscurity, but I'm not particularly worried about someone coming to one of our locations with a desire to print who should not be allowed to. Mind you, I could be wrong about that; I might create a special user just for simple print and tell all of our staff members the username and password (which is, of course, only marginally better than guest access.) I might consider the issue some more, but right now I think I'll go for guest access, as my chief desire is to make this painless for staff members (and painless for the IT staff.)
Your right, part of the reason why people log into the simpleprint server is to validate them as being an actual user of your company or school. If they can't log in, then they can't add printers, and if they can't add printers, they can't waste paper and ink. Its a good way of locking it down. But some places may not have this worry about outside people coming in, unlike an open college campus. So its up to you and your IT department on how you want to run things. Part of my job is to make sure that SimplePrint can reach your needs and wants, that includes security.
